Ghost Tech

This is one of our equipment cases, it contains some of the basic tools we use on a typical investigation. Click on the individual tools here to learn more about them and how Ghost Watch uses them to either find or debunk paranormal happenings.

MEL 8704 EMF METER

The MEL 8704 is our EMF meter of choice due to the fact that it is the only such instrument specifically designed for paranormal investigations. The MEL has multiple features which comes in handy when you are trying to gather as much data as you can with minimum equipment. It has a built in ambient thermometer which allows for temperature reading near the K-probe (the blue wire at the top), this is essential for validating cold spots. We also chose the MEL for it's ability to record maximum and minimum levels of both temperature and EMF. This one device allows us to quickly take an average base line. Another nice addition on the MEL that no other meter in it's price range can offer is "Burst Mode", this mode allows near real time readings of EMF, this is a great mode when trying to validate a presence. The MEL comes in many different models, the one we use now is the standard first model and serves us quite well.

k2

Our next favorite meter is the K-2, this one is a basic EMF meter, it is extremely sensitive to the EM field and as such has gained a reputation as a validation tool. The theory is that a ghost can manipulate the EM field by getting close to the head of this meter. By varying his distance a willing apparition can in theory make the lights light up in sequences to answer questions. The other use for this meter is as serious debunking tool. It's wide frequency range means the K-2 can be used to pick up EMF from everyday electrical appliances which may cause EM sensitive reactions in certain individuals who in turn may mistake these feelings for paranormal activity.

Natural Tri field Meter

The Natural Tri-Field Meter was originally designed to study occurrences in the natural EM fields of the earth and sun. It is an extremely sensitive piece of equipment and is not recommended for armature ghost hunters due to the sensitivity. This is not typically a mobile unit. It has four modes, electric, magnetic, sum and radio/microwave. When it is used in the microwave setting the meter acts like an analog EMF meter and can be carried around slowly. When used in the other three settings the meter will respond to ant disturbances in the EM fields around it. The meter is not tuned to the typical 60Hz frequency but rather geared toward the lower natural frequency of around 50Hz. Depending on atmospheric conditions it will pick up thunderstorms from miles out. Cell phones and radio transmitters will also cause it to register. As an investigation tool we use the tri-field set to sum (very sensitive), place it in a room and point a stationary camera at it while conducting EVP sessions.

TFM3

The Ramsey TFM-3 tri-field it a kit that you assemble yourself. You can also buy one pre-assembled but the TFM-3 does not come factory assembled at all, in other worlds someone has to build it from a kit. It is released through Ramsey Electronics and is not mad for paranormal investigations but it has some great features that make it an ideal tool for consideration in a ghost kit. First of all it is a tri-field and it is a low budget one at that. it's hard to find a tri-field for under $100 but this kit is and for that price you get an RF detector, magnetic detector and my favorite a electrostatic detector. In short you get a cheap ion counter of sorts. You wont get an actual number but the lights will show polarity and power level of static in the air. Some believe the presence of ions can indicate ghost activity so the TFM-3 seems well equipped to test that theory. It's light mean it can be set stationary with a camera on it for easy data gathering and review.

Digital Audio

We use many digital recorders this is the Olympus VN-4100 PC, The RT-EVP, and the ZOOM H2. These models allow for a great frequency response that a lot of recorders just can not capture. When we are conducting EVP sessions we need to be able to hear into the lower frequency ranges, the RT-EVP is the first true EVP recorder. Unlike all other audio recorders it was designed for paranormal investigation and it's frequency response is much better. It has been designed to record in the infra sound range and can record sound frequencies as low as 15 Hz. These recorders allows us to capture a broad spectrum of sound and are incredibly sensitive. These devices either download data right to computers by a built in USB jack or cary a SD memory card. They are fast and reliable and are some of the most valuable data collectors we use.

IR Thermometer

The infrared thermometer is often seen used by many ghost hunters but care must be taken when using this tool for any serious research work. it is important to note that the reading is from where the IR beam is making contact. This tool is great for debunking cold spots and finding where air is entering a room. It is not a practice tool for hunting down cold spots for this you will require an ambient temperature probe like the MEL has.

Flash Lights

What can be said about flash lights, except make sure you have enough. Things do go bump in the night and that thing is usually the typical ghost hunter who's flashlight ran out of batteries or some other power failure. The number one cause of injury to ghost hunters is not caused by ghost, it's caused by lack of light. So make sure you're tool kit includes a lot of flashlights, LED lights are small, cheap and much brighter than there counterparts. Always keep several on hand or in your pocket, you never know when one may quit working while your in a pitch dark basement.

DVR System

We use an infrared DVR system to monitor hot spots on cases. This system allows us to not only watch for "ghosts", it allows us to check for possible terrestrial based contamination. The system is up gradable to 16 cameras if we have need for them.
